About Grootbos Private Nature Reserve
Situated less than two hours from Cape Town and overlooking the spectacular Walker Bay, Grootbos encapsulates a unique environment of conservation and human development.
The reserve protects 1768 hectares of unique Cape Floral Kingdom with over 780 species of indigenous flora. A walk, horse ride or 4x4 drive through the nature reserve offers young and old an introduction to nature’s more subtle nuances.
Whether one’s interests are birding, gardening, wild flowers, whale watching, diving with great white sharks or relaxing on spectacular unspoilt beaches, Grootbos has it all.
The gourmet cuisine is crafted from the finest and freshest local ingredients, and accommodation is in spacious luxury suites, all with sweeping views across the ocean.
Eco Initiatives:
- Grootbos is dedicated to the conservation of the Cape Floral Kingdom and adjacent marine eco systems
- Its successful model of eco tourism has been widely acclaimed, won numerous awards, and has initiated a number of conservation projects in the region. Central to the strategy is the Grootbos Green Futures Foundation, a non profit organisation with its three pillars of conservation, education and research
- The foundation is working in close co-operation with partners from around the world to achieve its objectives. In 2003 Grootbos established the Green Futures Horticultural and Life Skills College, which provides annual, practical based training for unemployed people from local communities
- By staying at Grootbos you contribute directly to the conservation of the reserve and surrounding natural areas as well as the development of sustainable livelihoods amongst local communities
